Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm, most commonly Elaeis guineensis. The fruits grow together in large clusters known commercially as fresh fruit bunches (FFB). Each fruit contains an outer fleshy portion called the mesocarp and an internal seed containing the kernel. Palm oil is obtained from the mesocarp rather than directly from the seed.
After mature fresh fruit bunches are harvested, they are transported to a palm-oil mill for processing. The fruits are separated from the bunch, treated and mechanically pressed to release crude palm oil from the mesocarp. The crude oil can then undergo clarification and further refining depending on its intended food or industrial application.
