Stearic Acid

Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid with an 18-carbon chain. Also known as octadecanoic acid, it is a soft, waxy solid with the chemical formula C₁₈H₃₆O₂. Stearic acid is solid at room temperature and is used in various pharmaceuticals and industrial applications, including cosmetics, skincare, candle making, the food industry, and the production of plastics and rubber.

Stearic acid, a long-chain fatty acid, is derived from vegetable oils and animal fats. It is used in the production of detergents, soaps, hair care products, and cosmetics, such as bar soap, shampoos, shaving cream, and candles.

Stearic Acid Usage

Stearic acid is used in a variety of personal care and home care products, including moisturizers, sunscreens, cosmetics, makeup, soap, baby lotions, and laundry products. Known as stearin when derived from palm oil, this product is commonly used in creams and lotions as an emollient and thickener.

It is also added to candles to create harder wax, leading to a slower burn and greater opacity. Additionally, in soaps, stearic acid helps make the composition firmer.

Stearic Acid uses include:

  • Making soap and cleansers (one of the most common ways it’s used worldwide)
  • Improving the efficacy and texture of cleansers, lotions, and skincare/hair products, including shampoo and conditioner
  • Making cosmetics/makeup
  • Stabilizing the texture of shaving creams and lubricants
  • Creating detergents, house cleaners and textile softeners
  • Forming and softening plastics
  • Making candles
  • Making chewing gum
  • Making supplements/tablets
  • Stearic Acid’s structure (being an 18-carbon chain fatty acid) allows it to help improve the texture and consistency of other products. It can help make skin/hair/household products solid and improve their ability them to mix with water.
