Calcium Salt of Palm Fatty Acids Also known as calcium palmitate, calcium salt of palm fatty acids is a chemical compound formed by the reaction of calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH)₂) with fatty acids derived from palm oil, commonly sourced from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD).
This calcium salt is made from pure vegetable oil and contains a high concentration of C16 palmitic acid, which is saturated and highly digestible in the lower gut.
Due to its predominantly saturated nature, it has a high melting point.
The saponification of long-chain fatty acids from palm fatty acid distillate with calcium ions results in calcium salts — a type of rumen-inert fat. These calcium salts contain significant levels of fatty acids such as palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1), and linoleic acid (18:2).
